Already one month ago a reader of our weblog Bart Janssens announced that the publication of a new book could be expected soon (see his comment in ‘About’). He described it as a beautiful new book with stories, testimonies and with 130 full page colour photographs. The book is published to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Friends of Mount Athos (1990-2020). The book is edited by Athos map-maker Peter Howorth (NZ), Chris Thomas (GB) and the pictures are made by Roland Baetens (B), all veteran volunteers of the FoMA footpath team. And don’t forget that the foreword is by the Prince of Wales!
And now finally yesterday, the 28th of October, the book has been published, as we read on the website of the publisher, Brepols in Belgium. The book can be directly ordered here and it costs € 85,00. You can also use the order form below:
The book contents four parts and a map. In part one “Before” old stories are collected, in part two “Encounters” more recent texts about Athos are published, part three is reserved for the FOMA Footpaths Project and in part four “Back Matter” various topics are presented.

Enkele weken geleden kwam ik de aankondiging van dit boek ook al ergens tegen, op de ene site september en op een andere oktober als datum voor publicatie en ga het nu gelijk bestellen.
Met veel plezier lees ik al jaren de Athosweblog en zoals je eerder opmerkte vindt je bij boekhandel Drosinos in Ouranopolis altijd iets nieuws. Afgelopen zomer 2019 o.a. lag er nog 1 Engels exemplaar van ‘Mount Athos, Wine’ door E. kefalopoulou.
‘Epifanis red’ uit Mylopotamos is een aanrader.
Enige tijd geleden nog eens gezocht naar ‘Mount Athos’ van Norwich, 1966, prijzen van 14 tot 200!
Op de gok uit Engeland de goedkoopste €14,50 besteld, de beschrijving beloofde wat. Er kwam een puntgaaf exemplaar met perfect stofomslag en op de titelpagina met vulpen ‘. Best wishes from John Julius Norwich. Met veel plezier gelezen, maar wat een somberheid in het voorwoord.
Bij antiquariaat Brinkman vorig zomer ook heel wat Athos boeken aangeschaft en ‘Athos, or the Mountain of the monks’. van A. Riley 1887 in een adem uitgelezen, een prachtig verslag.

Onlangs zat ik op de Athosweblog de boekenlijst nog eens door te nemen, o.a. Mount Athos Booklist 1400, 14-08-2019 en kwam bij W.P.Theunissen en zijn drie boeken over De Heilige berg, resp. 1944, 1951 en 1956. Echter er is nog een vierde Athos publicatie.

Bijzonder dat er in de oorlogsjaren nog boeken over Athos verschenen, maar dat geld ook voor het prachtige ‘Monchsland Athos’ van Dr. F. Dolger , München 1943.

Beste Wim Voogd, vanmiddag wilde ik bij mijn boekhandel het boek “Encounters on the Holy Mountain” bestellen maar het bleek nog niet leverbaar. Is er iets bekend over de publicatie datum?
