I will like to point out that one can also safely navigate the mountain with the use of a GPS device (e.g. a smartphone). This is thanks to OpenStreetMap project that anyone can edit. Especially for Athos I have walked and tracked all major paths of Athos and also mapped all the tracks from aerial images, so I would say that the web-map is rather complete. So I would urge anyone that is a little bit tech savvy to do the same i.e. if you walk a new route just put it on OpenStreetMap and everyone gets your update. Nowadays there are also applications e.g. on Android that can work on offline maps so no need for network. There are web sites where segments of the OpenStreetMap (e.g. for a whole country such as Greece) have been already prepared and converted to the appropriate format to download to your phone (e.g. http://www.openandromaps.org/en/downloads/europe)
