As the starting point of our bi-annual pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain we chose to take the boat from Ierissos. It was our first departure from that more remote spot. The town lies on the northern shore of the Athonian peninsula. We took a taxi from Ouranopolis, where we had spent the night in a hotel. It is about a 20 minutes’ drive to the harbour, virtually crossing the Xerxes canal.
Time to say goodbye to dear ones of the opposite sex on the quay.
Entering the boat, called Panagia (virgin), the Greek border police checks the passports and diamoniterions (passports for Athos). Here with the pilgrims Jacques and Herman. To our relief the paperwork was approved. There is even a mobile service to get your diamoniterion at the quay. From a van that was placed right next to the boat.
The Panagia proved herself a very fast forward speedboat, that rushes in less than an hour to Vatopediou. The conditions of the sea are completely different from the southern shore. Here the wind and waves have all the freedom they need for full development. We lay on lee shore. Despite a mere force of Beaufort 3 the waves wore white heads. While at the same time the sea at Ouranoupolis lay flat on its back. In weather like this is quite imaginal that Xerxes’ fleet of 300 ships and 20.000 man, was crushed here on the rough northern shores of Athos. The reason he gave order to build a canal through the peninsula during the 5th century BC. It was two kilometres long and 30 meters wide. An extraordinary endeavour.
The boat produced a lot of white water. The top deck was flushed from time to time and there was a constant mist of tiny droplets. My camera got wet and would produce somewhat vague images the next couple of days. Here we’re passing the tip of Cape Arapis, the outmost tip of the total inhabited peninsula within the larger Athonian peninsula. It is shaped as a thumb.

In the Vasiliou Bay, a little island with the ruins of Vasiliou monastery and a defensive tower is placed on a strategic spot. There are works on the walls, as practically everywhere these days on Athos.
The first buildings that come in sight is the arsanas (harbour) of Hilandariou in the Vasiliou Bay.

Hallo Heman Voogd; we zijn van plan om in de lente van 2016 naar de heilige berg te gaan. De eerste dagen om Iviron, Vatopedi en Chilandar te bezoeken.
Hoe vaak gaat de boot van Ierissos naar Iviron en terug? Kun je de diamonitirion in Ierissos ophalen of moet je eerst in Ouranopolis ophalen en dan met taxi naar Ierissos? Haal je dan de boot (vertrek hoelaat?). Wat kun je ons adviseren voor deze klooster? Zijn ze strikt met de diamonitirion als je over de 4 dagen verblijft of moet je verplicht naar Karyes toe om het te verlengen?

Beste Hadrian Liem,
De boot van Ierissos gaat 1 x per dag . Vanwege de wind meestal maar tot Vatopedi. Wij hebben het diamonitirion opgehaald in Ouranoupoulis en dan met de taxi, tijd genoeg maar wel van te voren een taxi bestellen. We hebben gezien dat er ook een auto met diamonitirions op de kade van Ierissos staat. Boot gaat uit mijn hoofd om kwart voor negen (nakijken). Als er te veel wind is aan de noordkant en hij vaart niet kan je nog terug naar Ouranoupolis om te proberen of de kwart voor 10 ferry wel vaart. Advies: gaat het je ook om het wandelen of wil je primair de diensten meemaken? Als je dit laatste wil dan moet je met taxi’s gaan dan hou je veel tijd over in het klooster. Wij lopen de hele dag bv het kustpad van Vatopedi naar Iviron en bezoeken onderweg Pantokrator en Stavronikita. Dat vraagt wel enige conditie. Pin me er niet op vast maar wij gaan voor de extra dag niet naar Karyes. Als we langer willen doen we dat wel.

Onze plan voor volgend jaar mei is om de eerste 2 nachten in Chilandar te verblijven. Daarna naar Vatopedi. We zijn nog nooit geweest in deze klooster.
Echter, we krijgen diamonitirion voor alleen de eerste 4 dagen? En omdat de 4e dag van ons verblijf valt dan op een zondag, daarom moeten we op de 3e dag, als we van Chilandar naar Vatopedi gaan, gaan we een omweg maken: met de boot eerst naar de arsanas Mikra Giovantsa naar Daphni en vervolgens naar Karyes voor de verlenging, alvorens we naar Vatopedi gaan.
Ik heb nog vragen voor je:
1. Kun je op de derde dag al je diamonitirion verlengen, of worden we straks weggestuurd?
2. Is de Holy Epistasia op zaterdagen slechts open tussen 10 en 12u?
3. Zijn kloosters Vatopedi en Iviron streng met het toelaten van pelgrims die hun diamonitirion verlopen zijn?

Verlengen kan vanaf de eerste dag. Ik weet niet de openingstijden van de Epistasia. Grote kloosters alsVatopedi en Iviron checken diamonitiron altijd. Maar of ze niet meer toelaten weet ik niet maar het lijkt me sterk dat ze je weigeren als er geen boot meer gaat.
De Heilige Epistasia is op vier dagen in de week open, altijd van 9.00-12.00 uur. De dagen zijn dinsdag en woensdag, vrijdag en zaterdag.
