In post nr 220 we told you about the rare (only 2 copies exist) book of Riley with pictures of Athos, taken by mr Owen during his voyage in 1883, on auction in November 2007 at Sotheby’s.
At the same time Riley published his “normal” publication, with black and white engravings/illustrations, which is now available on the internet in a pdf-file.
The illustrations I will show here are copies of the photos he took (fx. see below: Phiale Lavra).
This picture of Owen is the same as the illustration below
Lavra – monks gathered around the Phiale
Athos map – earlier published in blog nr 1057
Ag. Pavlou – monastic engraving from 1850
Docheiariou – inside the Church
Engraving: all the monasteries
Grigoriou – monastic engraving 1819
Karyes – main street full with people
Karyes 1883: Here is almost the same scene on a picture, but slightly different. The picture is most likely from Owen, because it is taken in 1883, but I cannot confirm it.
Vatopediou – plan of the church
and I will end with a medical advice from the Athos-book of Riley: who wants some rat-oil? Please order through this site!

not on topic but worth mentioning. The metal roof on top of the protaton has finally been removed after all these years. As you can see from this pic by Yiannis:
