Today some pictures of the monastery Filotheou: its buildings, courtyard, church and interior. But first the plan of the monastery:
After passing the gate (1) you will see this courtyard in front of you, with a remarkable green lawn (N on the plan).
When you turn left, you will see the SE corner (buildings B and D, mainly cells) and a part of the Katholicon
Next to the Katholicon a large cypress
When turning to the South the entrance to the Katholicon showes up and the Phiale (5)
The Katholicon, with its a-typical clock tower, and Phiale from the other angle/ the first floor
Church from above (from the second floor)
The Phiale and the new library (building L)
The green lawn of Filotheou, with the library and the Abbot’s quarters (buildings L and M)
Behind the church: a worn stone tablet with the Byzantine Dubble Headed Eagle
Somewhere in the SW corner I found this room with a millstone to produce olive oil
And near this room I found this device, probably with a grinding purpose (look at the ribbed floor), and a large iron press on the background
Stairs near the guesthouse (building E and F)
A reception room in the guesthouse
The guestbook with a notice to visitors
Another room in the guesthouse
A fresco of an archangel and the Virgin Mary above the entrance to the Trapeza (4)
An (unknown) Greek inscription on the wall of the church
The outside wall of Filotheou (West wall)
Next time I will show you the outstanding fresco’s of the exonarthex of Filotheou.
