After half an hour walk from Mylopotamos I arrived at Filotheou. I rejoined Winfried, Peter and Jitze, who I will accompany during the rest of our stay on Mt. Athos. We only had a couple of minutes the visit this monastery, but I tried to make some pictures of the outside, which I will show you now, and the inside, with some details photos of the exonarthex of the katholicon, which I will show next blogs. This picture is shot here (see I on the plan).
This picture showes the South East wing of the monastery (see II on the plan), with balconies that have to get some attention.
Old balconies of Filotheou (see III)
The South side of Filotheou (see IV)
A monk’s wash hanging to dry – detail of the South side (see V)
Filotheou: in front of the entrance there is a stone bench with a water tap
The same bench 21 years ago (1989, with Fanta and Jaap)

The entrance to the monastery, seen from the courtyard
Next time more pictures from the inside of the monastery.

Mountain? But I think it is a head with black hair.
… of someone who should be using Head & Shoulders? 😉
I am 90% certain that this is a depiction of Mount Athos.
21 churches are pictured, 20 Monasteries and Karies. On the left The Holy Virgin and Christ are depicted as protectors and on the right, from what I can tell it looks like Saint Nicholas. Herman, where did you find this image?
correction (21 churches which represent the 20 monasteries and Karies)
George, I found the image on a Russian site but could not read it. It is a rare and intriging image
Thanks Herman,
I collect Russian Icons and Orthodox religious items. It is the first Russian depiction of Mount Athos in the style of an Icon I have ever seen, even after 4 years on Athos.
Mounth Athos, 17th century. Author unknown, 31,3 ? 26,3 cm. Today, icon is in Russian State Museum.
Thanks Mirko!
You’re welcome!
