999 – Books: Byzantium by Judith Herrin

Byzantium
I am reading a interesting book at the moment called Byzantium by Judith Herrin. Especially if you want to know more about the history of this longlasting medieval empire with the many emperors and the relation with the Holy Mountain and the orthodox belief I can recommend it strongly. One chapter nr. 18 is about Mount Athos but you can read other chapters about crusades, eunuchs and greek fire.

Don’t feel guilty over this.. I put a 4-giga memory card in my 70 euro digital camera just so I could take long videos. I made a 45 minute “documentary” of my last visit. Of course I respected the rules and didn’t film monks or the interior of the churches, but pretty much everything else is in there! I did it to show to my mother the beauty of Athos and also to “advertise” the place to my friends who used to be sceptical about coming along to one of my trips.
