864 – more maps

In 716 I showed you a new map of Mount Athos, which might be better than the Zwerger-map, although this last map shows more (old and disappeared) paths.

I found another map in my archive and I’ll show it here, but it not of any use, because of the poor quality and I’ve made bad pictures (I used it in 1986 during my stay on Athos and I protected the paper against water with a plastic film).

The map is from 1978 and is published by Papadopoulos in Athens.

And then there is this map, with some interesting unknown places like Ag. Onoufrios and Ag. Theologos, both kellia-farmhouses in the hills above Dionysiou and Grigoriou!

After the exhibition in Thessaloniki in 1997 there is another one, more important than this in Paris, because exhibits from 15 Museums from all the world (Greece, Russia, Cyprus, Germany) and from Mount Athos traveled to Helsinki, Art Museum (17 August 2006-21 January 2007). The visitors were more than … 100.000!!!

Special report about this exhibition (in Greek only)

About distances the story goes like this: a group of pelgrims asks a monk how long it will take before they reach their goal. And the monk says: and You want me to know that? The pelgrims disapointed walked away. After some 40 meters they heard the voice of the monk: when You walk like that You will need 2 hours and 20 minutes…Conclusion: trust only the kilometers, the time depends of your own. I think the Papadopoulos map is very interesting !
Could you make a good scan of it (very high resolution) and post it here or send it by email to anybody interested ?

  4. Wim says:

I will publish a better version of this map, first I’ll have to scan it.
