The first Athonite Academy was on a hill-top near Vatopediou and survived only a few decades in the 18th and 19th century. Only ruins remain (also see here and here).

Manuil Panselinos – in my opinion he is the best iconographer ever. We have lot of good iconographers today, but Manuil`s drawings are the best part of Orthodox Christian art.
