731 – old news: women on Athos ?

Two days after the international women day it is appropriate to pay some attention to women on this site. Because together with the leaflet of Roussikon, I found this article from Athens News 1997 in my archive about the ongoing discussion why women are not allowed on this little piece of the world.

And there is this Greek news item – with English subtitles – about this subject on You Tube:

And for those who want to know more, here is a statement of a member of the European parlement, Anna Karamanou of 16 January 2003.

The funny thing is that it is always the women that have absolutely no interest in ever visiting Mt Athos who protest about the Avaton. Orthodox women show respect to this rule and they don’t mind. At the end of the day, the whole mountain is the property of the monks of Athos and they are the ones that have the right to decide who they let in. It is an undisputed situation for 1000 years, it is not like they ever displaced any civilians in order to turn the mountain in a monastic community. This place is unique, and it is a world heritage site thanks to this 1000 year tradition. So they should ignore those EU desk-jokeys and carry on with their daily prayers…

Bad news: on Keliotes’ website I read that the building of the Agioritiki Estia was set on fire last Friday during riots in the Odós Egnatía. The building was hit by molotov bombs. How serious the damage is, I dont know.
