502 – Climbing Mt. Athos in 1836

Illustration from Sibthorps (1758 – 1796) botanical classic Flora Graeca: The summit of Mount Athos with Panagia chapel at 1500 m.

A recent account of the almost same hike you can read here. The difference? This lieutenant ended his climb at Panagia (1500 m) and used mules. Our reader Y. Milonas did it on foot and reached the top.
