The Associated Press
A senior Greek prosecutor is asking the government to send police to a religious sanctuary and expel a group of rebel monks.
Prosecutor Vassilis Floridis wrote the government to request police intervention at the monastic sanctuary of Mount Athos to enforce Greek court rulings that upheld an eviction order by authorities. Floridis is chief prosecutor in the nearby city of Thessaloniki.
Esfigmenou – 1997
Monks at the Esphigmenou monastery have defied monastic authorities for more than 30 years. They strongly oppose efforts to improve ties between Orthodox Churches and the Vatican.
Esphigmenou is one of 20 monasteries on the Athos peninsula. There was no immediate response from the government on Friday.
