Original military map here. Ouranopolis = mon. Porgos. Monoxilitis = Mon. Zionisou. Lavra and Prodromou are not on the right spot. There is a path that follows the mountainridge to Pavlou.This path follows the mountain range in the middle of the peninsula and is called The Way of the Bey.

Mon. ZionisÃou is not Thivaïs I think. As you may see in this map the letter Z is used in stead of D (also Záfni). In this place there used to be a metóchion of Ag. Monà DionisÃou: MonoxilÃtis. That is, I think, why the place is called Mon. ZionisÃou (so: belonging to the Monastery).

Your theory about Zionisiou is very convincing.
I do not know the other map. Can you plan a route with this map? The good thing about the map on nr. 379 is that it is the largest athos map on the internet, though no very accurate.

According to the Dutch writer dr W.P. Theunissen in his book “Op de heilige berg Athos – 1965”, the abbot of Ag. Pavlou Seraphim ordered to make this 17 km long path/road in 1952. About 500 workers build it between 1952 – 1954. It had mainly economical reasons (transportation of timber), but was also ment to prevent fires, and costed one million Drachmas.
Some monks protested because the workers used “devilish” mechanical saws. Official aprouvement from Karyes came on the 12th of march 1957. I do not think this the same as the path that is drawn on this map, because on the Zwerger-map you canfind a road from Pavlou to Amalfi.

I do not know if we talkin about the same path. I read about a path that follows the mountain ridge from say north to south, right in the middle of the peninsula as you van see on this map. It says on the map AJNEROZ,

1- Someone knows how many hours does it take (walking) from St.Paul to Lavra?
2- are footpaths ok?
3- is the foothpath easy to find?
4- it will be my first time in Athos. Is it a crazy idea to walk alone?
5- If it take more than one day. Can I sleep in the way? Where?

Dear Jose,
it is a long but relatively save walk and it takes some 5/6 hours, if you take the high path (which lies at 700 meters above sealevel). The signs are oke and it is not difficult to find your way. Walking alone is always a risk: if you fall and hurt yourself and there are not many who walk this route who can help you. But you will not be the first one who did this trip on your own so it is not a crazy idea !! Enjoy !

If you go alone be sure that the phonenumbers of the monasteries(in this case Lavra and Pavlou) are saved in your mobile phone. Though you are in the middle of nowhere there is connection on many places on the mountain. Last year I phoned my brother from the summit (2025,54 m) when he was in Sk. Profitou Elias.

The path to Lavra starts in Skiti Anni. It begins with stairs then you climb further to 700 meters. You will reach the point where you can climb to the mountain but you follow the path direction Lavra. Within an hour you will reach Kerasia. You will have to descend a little to visit this place. Then you maintain to walk for a couple of hours on the 700 meter line till you reach the point with an amazing view on Sk.Prodromou. Then you go left to Lavra and in one hour or so you are at your end destination.
To be on the safe site its better to reserve but there are a lot of beds in lavra.
