The artifact has been tentatively identified as a sauroter, (Greek: “lizard killer”). This bronze weapon served in the Classical period as the spike secured to the end of a spear shaft to counterbalance the iron spearhead and serve as a secondary weapon. The discovery of this rarely found artifact at the location where the helmets had been raised suggests that a warship sank in this area.
