In Athos literature every writer claims that the biggest cypress tree at the Lavra monastery is planted by Athanasios, founder of Lavra, in the 10th century. Could that be a true story, a tree more than 1000 years old?

groet, Wim
Sprouts can form from the cut trunk of bald cypress trees as old as 60 years. Most live up to 600 years, but some individuals have survived 1,200 years.
I wonder what the most common species of cypress is that you see on Mount Athos around the monasteries and sketes?
The link below is to some of the ancient meanings of the use of Cypress Trees…

I would like to get some of the seed cones for that tree in the Larva Courtyard to grow them at home. If anyone knows a way, let me know… spsurlow@outlook.com
I am thinking the cypress tree at the Great Larva might be Cupressus sempervirens. Common names for the Mediterranean cypress are Italian cypress, Tuscan cypress, graveyard cypress, or pencil pine.
